I have the same problem. Did a Google search for 4.6.1 and downloaded it. Now it works fine.

Hi,

It's a bug in the 4.6.2 engine. Sorry about that.
While I'm working on it, the only workaround is downgrading to the 4.6.1:

4.62 Bug

Postby bikini_browser » Tue Jan 08, 2008 8:26 pm

Yup!

I had to uninstall 4.62, reboot and re-install 4.61 in a new non default folder to make everything finally come back as normal. 4.62 made me lose more than 28 hours of email for more than 40 people.

How can we prevent this from happening again. I was on vacation when the crisis hit and I hate these kinds of problems. I recommended your software, so now I am looking really bad in the eyes of the management. :(

Must be related to Server 2003 since that is what my server is running or perhaps one of the MANY patches MS send out. I'll just ignore the update notice until I hear it is resolved. Thanks for the feedback.

I found that it only crashed when I was using the secure protocol option for updating a dyndns account. When i turned off secure updates the crashing stopped.

Not here, I'm using ZoneEdit and Sitelutions accounts and the service stopped anyway. Unless it has to do with the logging into any account?

DU 4.6.2 engine stops

Postby JMD » Tue Feb 26, 2008 10:10 am

I suddenly started seeing this problem this past Saturday, Feb 23rd. I've been running 4.6.2 since January 27th without a hitch. My system is Windows XP SP2. (Edit: DU Engine 4.6.2 build 177)

I'd like to fiercely assert that "nothing changed" on my system, but something obviously did. There is no "voodoo", as frustrating as that is sometimes. Whatever it was that changed, it caused DU 4.6.2's Engine to crash on startup. The admin module runs fine, but it's not updating my (luckily mostly static) IP anymore.

Visual Studio 2008's JIT debugger pops up every time I try to start the service, asking me if I want to debug the unhandled win32 exception. The exception is caused by dereferencing a null pointer: "access violation reading location 0x00000000." (Or at least that's what VS2008 is able to report to me.)

I can view the assembly at the exception, but since I don't have the debug symbols I can't provide any more detail than what I have.

On a side note, the Registration information must be maintained within the Engine as well because the Admin module doesn't even list my registration details anymore.

Hope you can get this fixed soon, Willy.

Have we got a "Fix" for this problem in 4.6.2 yet?

Not yet ... because it's not a general problem, only specific cases.
Example: in my XP Pro works good

And in my XP Pro it fails, so that's a moot point.

The problem is that the service dereferences a null pointer, aka Access Violation.

Perhaps if more people registered this very useful software Willy would be able to spend more time investigating the problem. :D

I had the same problem Had to downgrade to 3.6.3 to get it working. That version is running fine.

The error was:

==============================================
Faulting application DUEngine.exe, version 4.6.2.177, faulting module msvcr80.dll, version 8.0.50727.1433, fault address 0x00014e6e.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
==============================================

Uninstall/Reinstall did not fix this.

Good luck.

Forgot to add that this broke after installing XP SP3. Worked fine for a long time until XP SP3 was installed.

I've just paid my registration fee for 4.6.2 Pro and now it's stopped working. I've got the exact same symptoms as posted by icarusjj on Nov 20, 2007.
As this fault seems to have been around for a year, can I take it that there is now no support for this product and I've got to start experimenting with old versions of the app?

I've been running Windows XP with DirectUpdate for nearly 4 years now without any problems. But my Windows XP recently updated to SP3. Now the DirectUpdate engine won't run.

I get this error:

Faulting application DUEngine.exe, version 4.6.2.177, faulting module
msvcr80.dll, version 8.0.50727.762, fault address 0x00014eee.

I've read some post that suggest to downgrade DirectUpdate to 4.6.1.x. I'll try that.

I have my computer with Vista Business and directupdate work for a few weeks and since 2 months, the engine stop. I'm with 4.6.2 If the problem was identifed as a call or use of a function in msvcrt80.dll, please DO Something! Downgrade isn't a solution. What's different between the 2 versions ? There some code (newly introduced or in combination with new code) that cause the bug. So look at the first post vs windows update. I'm sure that the problem wasn't so complicated!

Same problem here with DU 4.6.2, Windows XP Pro with all updates applied to date. Engine runs but crashes trying to deref a null pointer when I ask it to update my ZoneEdit entry.
