I downloaded and installed the latest version (4.1.0 build 137) and installed it on SBS 2003. I'm getting the following system event log entries.

Yes, I confirm this little problem and this is a reply from William:

Apparently, the errors in the EventViewer are not really meaningful/important and can be safely ignored (although I'll try to remove it ).

and 2 days ago:

Errors in EventViewer are still under heavy investigations

According to Microsoft, three possible causes are:
1.The component or manifest depends on another program or component that is not installed.
2.The manifest contains XML content that is not valid.
3.The user does not have the correct permissions.

Directupdate is now build with VisualC++ 2005, and this is causing the error. VisualC++ 2005 supports a new deployment model (to prevent dll conflicts). To obtain all the needed version of the Microsoft C++ run-time files, download www.apachelounge.com/download/vcredist_x86.exe

See for info on this: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms235291.aspx

The deployment method William uses is a reccomended one by Microsoft, but I think William forget to include: Microsoft.VC80.MFCLOC.manifest file and the dll's mfc80chs.dll, fc80cht.dll, mfc80enu.dll, mfc80esp.dll, mfc80deu.dll, mfc80fra.dll, mfc80ita.dll, mfc80jpn.dll and mfc80kor.dll.

Hi Guys,

I already tried to include the MFCLOC manifest.
But then, the eventViewer reports a syntax error in the manifest !

I think there is something very unclear here, cos Microsoft knows about it, but does not provide any smart solution...

Simple ingore the errors for now.

Of course, i'm still 200% interested by more info ;)

visual c++ redistribution

Hi,

I'm sorry to say that even after installing the needed runtimes, the error still persists. Also note that these runtimes are still beta.

Error is a problem

Postby webman » Mon Mar 13, 2006 5:02 pm

When you add an account, it doesn't update, and sets the date to Dec-1969

I have to uninstall, then re-install, and remove references from the registry. I can add maybe 4 more accounts until it happens again.

I use zoneedit, and have had my directupdate not update my IP because of this error with the program. My event viewer is full of these errors, and when I put a security audit on the service, it is constantly trying to update a domain and cannot.

Start a new post with your error log and detailed report.

And the 3 error record in event viewer there are only when you open the admin console.

possible workaround

Postby ddp » Thu Mar 16, 2006 5:20 pm

Hi,

I may have stumbled on a workaround for this minor error.

1. Install the runtimes as suggested.
2. Copy the manifest file to the DirectUpdate folder (\winSxs\Manifests\x86_Microsoft.VC80.MFCLOC_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50215.4652_x-ww_dde438d7.manifest and rename to Microsoft.VC80.MFCLOC.manifest)
3. Edit the maifest by removing the SHA hash (use an example from one of the other manifest files)
4. Copy all DLL's from the MFCLOC policies folder to DirectUpdate folder.
5. Copy all DLL's from the CRT & MFC policies folder to DirectUpdate folder (overwriting any that exists) - use newer DLL's (version 8.0.50727.42) because there are 2 CRT folders.
6. Exit the application completely (including stopping the service) or reboot.
7. Check event log for errors after program restart.

This has worked for me without any consequence.

yes Steffen, you have right ... with vcredist_x86.exe the SideBySide error in event viewer don't appear,
but it's a workaround and I think willy will fix it in next release :)
