IP Double-check

Postby Guest » Tue Apr 18, 2006 8:35 pm

I posted this in new features, but it's also causes DirectUpdate to do malfunction (update to the wrong IP address), so I'll report it here again:

This is an old request, but it is also a serious unresolved problem:

I keep on coming across more and more websites that try to trick directupdate. Here's another:
www.findmyip.com
Also:
www.urgentclick.com/whats_my_ip_address.php

(In both cases, DirectUpdate will pick a wrong, obfuscating IP address.)

The problem again is that it is unpredictable when a website will choose to change its website code, whether deliberately or not, and cause DirectUpdate to pick the wrong ip address. It is unpredictable when a website that had formerly INVITED visitors and scripts to check IPs will change their mind and obfuscate the ip.

The solution is an option to force DirectUpdate, whenever an IP change is detected and BEFORE it updates the IP, to confirm that the SAME new ip address is also detected by ANOTHER website. (The user could select how many new websites have to confirm the change, but really just having ONE other website confirm would be enough.)

Hi,

Good news, this feature is almost ready, and will be available in the incoming 4.1.5...

Thx for the very interesting suggestion :)
Regards
William
