"Remote Cluster...."

Postby joachimgr » Wed Oct 07, 2009 7:51 am

Hi,

I've an idea for a function I call "remote cluster".

This is the given szenario:

I have a website hosted on two different computers in different sites, each with a
dynamic IP. On both sites runs Directupdate. The computer that update the DDNS-entry
at last answers requests for the site. That works well, but there is no failover,
if the computer to which the DDNS-entry points actual fails.

Now my idea:

The Directupdate-clients on both sites communicates over an own port and ask
every minute "are you there". If the other client answers, it's all ok. But if
there is no answer, the local client force an update for the DDNS-entrys and so
the request from outside find a functional target...

It is possible to realize that?

Hi Joachim,

Interesting feature.
Yes, should be doable.
I think the easiest way would be to use the admin port (40019 by default). So, network conf (firewall/nat) is required to open TCP comms on 40019.
So, you enable "remote cluster" for a dns account and enter a list of IPs/domains.
Every xx minutes, DU will "ping" the next entry in the list. If the entry doesn't reply AND it replied previously (to avoid forcing an update at every interval), then an update is forced.

Are you OK with that?
Cheers
